Patient-centered research for better health and healthcare

Emergency Services

Researchers at SMHC have conducted research on emergency department (ED) care for almost 2 decades. This research has focused primarily on older ED users, who are at high risk of poor outcomes. The most recent project, led by Jane McCusker and funded by the FRQ-S, used provincial administrative databases linked to ED survey data collected in a previous study, to better understand the relationship between community-based primary care services and ED use. The research also investigated the different services for elders provided in urban vs rural parts of the province and linked these differences to outcomes after an ED visit. At the end of the project, the researchers were invited to discuss the policy implications of their work with provincial and regional health authorities.
