Biography

Dr. Yaffe is a tenured Full Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine at McGill University and St. Mary’s Hospital Center in Montreal.As a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator Dr. Yaffe has been a recipient of research grants totaling over 3.7 million dollars, resulting in 60 published journal papers, 4 book chapters, 13 technical reports, and 186 academic presentations. These have covered topics revolving around diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and depression (particularly in the elderly), and the delivery of mental health services; family caregiving; elder abuse (having served as principal investigator on an interdisciplinary team that developed and validated the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index); anticipatory guidance models            ( across the lifespan, but especially in middle age); doctor-patient relationships; interdisciplinary health care; delivery of primary health care; colo-rectal cancer detection; quality assurance in ambulatory care; and family medicine and behavioral science education.

Administratively he has served as Post-graduate Residency Program Director for the McGill  Department of Family Medicine. At St. Mary’s Hospital he has been Family Medicine Undergraduate and Postgraduate Educational Coordinators, Director of its Family Medicine Centre and Family Medicine Residency Program, and Chief of its Department of Family Medicine.

At McGill University he teaches at the medical undergraduate, postgraduate, and Continuing Professional Education / faculty development levels, as well as does Masters and PhD level thesis supervision. His distinction in these areas has been recognized by his early induction into the McGill University Faculty of Medicine Honor List for Educational Excellence. In 2007 he was the Inaugural Recipient of the Prize of Excellence for the Advancement of Family Medicine Education of the Quebec College of Family Physicians and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.  Internationally Dr. Yaffe has been a Visiting Professor at 6 institutions. As well he has been recognized as an Honorary Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, is an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Network for Prevention of Elder Abuse, and has held a number of leadership positions in community-based health and education volunteer organizations.
